Here is the latest info on TSA identification requirements. Note that starting Aug. 15 gender must be specified when making an airline reservation. I can see the possibility for problems, especially in some parts of the country, when the legal name and gender in the reservation don't match the physicqal presentation. One option is to have a government-issued ID with your legal name and gender, but with a girl-mode pic. Another is to travel in andro-mode so your presentation, although en femme or gender-bent, is discernable as the same person in the ID. In most cases, it shouldn't be a problem as long as the ID matches the reservation. Most airline personnel and TSA screeners don't care how you are dressed as long as they can make a positive correlation between the you, your reservation and your ID.

Beginning May 15, when making reservations, airline passengers will be asked to provide their full name, as depicted on the government-issued identification they will carry while traveling. As stated in a recent TSA press release (issued May 13, 2009): This development is the first publicly-noticeable step in implementing the multi-phase Secure Flight program that shifts predeparture watch-list-matching responsibilities from individual aircraft operators to TSA.
In the second phase of Secure Flight implementation beginning August 15, 2009, passengers will be required to supply their date of birth and gender when booking airline flights. These additional measures are expected to reduce misidentification of passengers who have names similar to individuals on government watch lists and better identify those persons who may pose a known or suspected threat to aviation.
TSA intends to employ Secure Flight protocols in vetting 100 percent of all domestic passengers on commercial flights by early 2010 and 100 percent of all international commercial passengers by the end of 2010.
